South African wines
With the advent of a post-apartheid democracy, the world has rediscovered
South African wines.
Until the 1970s South Africa’s winemaking tradition was strongly
influenced by Germanic styles, despite a latent French connection (way
back in the late 17th century, French Huguenot immigrants brought skills
and expertise to bear in nourishing the local viticulture – first
established by Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in the 1650s). Since the end
of the apartheid era, however, wine-makers have been at pains to learn
new skills.
Many of our wines are imported and we are known as one of the wine capitals of the world.
