Gauteng and the North West cultural tours
The province of Gauteng – Sotho for ‘Place of Gold’
– is one of the wealthiest areas in the world, yet it is dominated
by large areas of impoverished townships, such as the notorious
Soweto. The smallest province in the country, Gauteng is home to
45% of the white population.
The two major towns in the area are Pretoria and Johannesburg,
both of which contain extraordinary characteristics. The battles
of apartheid and the struggles for democracy were fought on the
street and in the courtrooms of these two cities. After apartheid
and the disbanding of segregation many black South Africans moved
into the city and previously ‘Whites Only’ areas.
Experience Gauteng and the North West's diverse
cultures
As a result, the city centres now have a distinct African cultural
feel. Despite the well-publicised high crime rate in the area, you
should not be deterred from going to Johannesburg and Pretoria:
these are places that need to be visited to be understood.
The North West province is scattered with nature reserves and game
parks, all relatively remote, diverse and most certainly less visited
by the overseas visitor. But, at an altitude of 1000-2000 metres,
it is malaria free.
In addition to the wildlife, the Magaliesberg Mountains offer
wonderful hiking trails and holiday resorts. The province has one
of the most well known features of South Africa – Sun City,
an amazing, extravagant gambling resort where the phrase ‘you
have to see it to believe it’ rings remarkably true.
